About Avalon

Avalon House is beautiful historic weatherboard building dating back to 1865, standing in an acre of grounds running down to the Ovens River. Just 30 kilometres from Mt Hotham and in the foothills of the dividing range.

It offers great accommodation, good food and a great atmostphere and is ideally situated for skiing, walking, bike riding or just enjoying the quiet beauty of the area and the great food and wines in the area around.

We have regular events throughout the main holiday seasons, such as music (local and international reggae, blues, jazz, classical etc), gallery events, functions etc.

.

Mt Feathertop near Harrietville provides great winter skiing and summer walking

The main part of the building was the original mine manager's house built by Thomas Garby Davey, the Manager of the Harrietville Mining Company, who arrived from England in 1889. The building was completed in 1865. For more about the history of Avalon see our history pages.

The entire building has been  renovated with new roof, insulation, central heating and many other features but preserves the integrity of the original building. It now offers four units/cottages.

We run Avalon with a philosophy that focuses on the community and the environment. We are progressively renovating the building to improve its energy and water efficiency including the installation of solar hot water and photovoltaics. Three tanks holding nearly 70,000 litres of water will collect most of our rainwater and recycle it into the gardens. Most equipment in the building is the most energy and water efficient we could find, and as we need new equipment we aim to replace with more efficient models.

The gardens will be progressively developed to provide local produce for the cafe and the gallery and our music nights will also largely focus on local artists and local musicians.
